What is Agrivoltaics?
Agrivoltaics, also known as Agri-PV or solar farming, combines solar energy generation with agricultural production on the same land. This approach enhances land use efficiency by integrating renewable energy with farming activities.
Agrivoltaics systems vary to suit different agricultural needs, but the goal remains the same: compatibility with the environment, support for agricultural activities, and economic viability. Each site requires careful planning to ensure the solution works effectively within its unique environmental context.
Solar Grazing at a South Texas Solar Farm (200MW)
At a 200MW solar farm in South Texas, we’ve partnered with local sheep farmers to use grazing as a natural and effective method for vegetation management. By replacing heavy, hydrocarbon-powered mowing equipment, this collaboration reduces maintenance costs, minimizes environmental impact, and creates a sustainable solution that benefits both the solar farm and the agricultural community.
Access to Land and Reviving Traditions
This partnership provides sheep farmers with much-needed access to grazing land at a time when development pressures have removed large areas from agricultural production. For many farmers, it’s an opportunity to sustain their livelihoods and continue family farming traditions.
I’ve been in sheep production my entire life—my granddad did it, my dad did it, and now I’m doing it. With partnerships like this, we’re seeing an opportunity for sheep farming to thrive again, like it did 50 years ago.
The Synergy of Sheep and Solar
Solar grazing represents a perfect partnership between clean energy production and sustainable agriculture. Farmers gain access to land and additional income streams, while solar farm operators benefit from a cost-effective and eco-friendly vegetation management solution. By using sheep for vegetation control, the solar farm achieves large-scale maintenance in a way that aligns with operational needs and sustainability goals.
Effective Vegetation Management
Sheep are uniquely suited for managing vegetation on solar farms, thriving on grass, weeds, and brush. They provide a natural, year-round solution that keeps the land in optimal condition while reducing environmental impact.
Grass is the number one problem, but sheep thrive on it, as well as the weeds and brush growing at these sites.
Endless Possibilities Through Collaboration
Agrivoltaics demonstrates that sustainable energy and agriculture can coexist, creating endless possibilities for innovation and impact. By combining access to land with partnerships between experts in agriculture and renewable energy, initiatives like beekeeping and sheep grazing show what’s possible when industries work together. Whether it’s supporting pollinators to improve crop yields or using sheep to manage vegetation, the potential for collaboration continues to grow, offering a future where land is used more efficiently to benefit both communities and the environment.
